Chitragupt is a Hindu mythological character who serves as the registrar of the dead assigned with the task of maintaining the records of the actions of human beings. When souls arrive at Yamaloka, Chitragupta reads out their deeds, allowing the god of death, Yama, to decide whether they go heaven or hell. But as it is with most of mythology, there are hidden truths embedded in creative imagery.  Chit is consciouness and gupt is secret. Whatever act we do they remain registered in Chit and propel our actions in future, when the past is dead, unconsciously. In Rigveda Chit is therefore called the biggest power that rules this world and Chitgupta the most powerful.  (http://www.onlineved.com/rig-ved/?language=2&mandal=8&sukt=21&mantra=18)
